CHAPTER FOUR

After saying our goodbyes to everyone, I followed Skylar outside to her car. She opened the passenger side door for me. A gentlewoman. Or at least she was pretending to be. I hated to be that way. Skylar had always been sweet. But the version that I had known in the past wasn’t the one trying to get into my pants.

That definitely changed things. Made people do things they usually didn’t do. That was where I always got in trouble. I gave women too much credit for the cutesy shit they did in the beginning. Even with that thought in the back of my head, I didn’t want to think the worse about Skylar.

She flashed me the sweetest smile as she climbed into the driver’s seat, “Ready to go?”

I nodded and reminded myself that this was not a path to forever. I barely knew this woman. Didn’t even recognize her when she walked up to me. And if she didn’t look so damn good, I wouldn’t have given her a second look. Definitely wouldn’t have jumped at the opportunity to get in the car with her.

“I’m really happy we ran into each other tonight,” Skylar said. Her voice melted in the dark silence between us. I couldn't help but smile as I gazed at her profile in the dim light of the car. Every feature seemed to glow with an inner radiance that captivated me. “Seriously. It was a really nice surprise.”

She reached across the middle console and put her hand on my thigh. I wondered if she realized that simple touch had set me on fire. My hormones raged. My heart fluttered. My mind desperately tried to hold onto some semblance of logic. The last thing I needed was to get too wrapped up in this woman. Or any woman. I’d been there and done that. It ended up being a massive waste of time. I didn’t have the time or the patience.

“This is the part where you tell me how nice it was to see me,” Skylar said, rubbing her hand from my knee to the hem of my dress. As the bottom of my dress moved up my thigh, so did her hand.

I bit the inside of my cheek, trying to gain some semblance of composure. Inside, I felt like I was going crazy. It had been over a year since I’d gotten this type of treatment from a woman. As much as I knew I needed to push her away, I didn’t want to. It felt too damn good. And honestly, it was what I’d been hoping for when I accepted her offer to take me home.

“You’re getting very familiar, Skylar Dunn. It’s like you’re trying to start something.”

Skylar glanced over at me. The split second was enough to get sucked in by her dreamy brown eyes. Her lips curled upward into a smile and she giggled as she told me, “How we finish this is totally up to you.”

“Interesting,” I said, looking out the window.
